Foamy masala chai latte in a cup

We live in a world filled with diverse and delightful hot beverages – from pumpkin-spiced lattes to cappuccinos – still few can compare to the sweet fragrant aroma of Chai. Masala chai, chai latte, or just plain chai, this spiced beverage has been enjoyed in India for centuries, and today it is devored cupfull at a time all around the world for its sweet and aromatic flavours.

Origins of Chai

The first thing to note is that Chai is the Hindi word for tea, so when you say ‘Chai tea’ you’re basically saying tea tea. Masala chai or simply chai as it’s commonly called, has its roots deeply embedded in Indian culture and history. The origins of Chai date back to ancient times, tracing its beginnings to the Indian Ayurvedic tradition, where the infusion of spices and herbs was believed to offer medicinal benefits. As tea became a popular beverage in India during the British colonial era, the combination of black tea and spices, including cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger, gave rise to the Chai we know and enjoy today.

Mastering the Art of Chai

While Chai may seem simple, achieving the perfect balance of flavours is not so easy. Traditionally, Chai is prepared by simmering black tea leaves and spices in water and milk. The key lies in the timing the the brew and balance of tea leaves and spices. It’s a delicate dance between brewing the tea long enough to extract its essence without overcooking the spices. Some chaiwalas (tea vendors) in India have honed this skill to perfection, creating a harmonious blend of flavours in every pot they brew.
