Homemade Tomato Chutney Recipe

Homemade tomato chutney surrounded by ginger, tomatoe and coriander

The tradition of chutney-making in India dates back centuries. These condiments, often showcasing bold and contrasting flavours, play an integral role in Indian cooking. While chutneys can be crafted from a variety of fruits, vegetables, and herbs, the humble tomato chutney stands out as a timeless favourite.

Tomato chutney offers a delightful blend of tangy and slightly sweet notes, balanced by the warmth of Indian spices – and a little bit of chilli for those so inclined. Its versatility makes it a welcome addition to many Indian meals. Whether you’re enjoying dosas, idlis, curry or parathas, this tomato chutney recipe adds a punch of zesty flavour to complement these traditional Indian favourites.

Easy Tomato Chutney Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 400g tomatoes, chopped
  • 30g ginger, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilli, finely chopped
  • 60ml apple cider vinegar
  • 150g sugar
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Add the tomatoes to a blender and blitz until smooth.
  2. Add the ginger, garlic, chilli, and vinegar to the blender and continue to blitz until smooth.
  3. Pour the mixture into a pot and add the sugar. Bring it to a simmer. Cook over a low heat until thickened, approximately 20 minutes.
  4. Adjust salt and sugar to taste. Remove from the heat and allow to cool. As it cools, it will thicken further.
  5. Transfer the chutney into sterilised glass jars while it’s still warm. Seal and allow to cool to room temperature.
  6. Store in a cool, dark place. The tomato chutney will keep for up to 6 months. Once opened, keep refrigerated and use within a month.
